Laura Strähle and Ellen Rouwendal winners of Archiprix Netherlands 2017

In the former panopticon shape prison in Haarlem in the Netherlands on saturday June 17,  the winners were announced of the national Dutch Archiprix. The jury reviewed the 26 entries selected by the Dutch universities for architecture, urban design and landscape architecture as their best graduation projects, and selected one winner and three honorable mentions.
Two exhibitions were presented: The Archiprix Netherlands 2017 and the Archiprix International Ahmedabad 2017.

Winner
Design & Build: From Landscape to Roofscape, designed by Laura Strähle ann Ellen Rouwendal, TU Delft (architecture)
This project proposes using small-scale interventions, designed for and ultimately built in Okana in Kenya, to initiate positive developments in poor areas. The ingenious design constructs a self-bearing roof structure that can be variously clustered and filled in. There is an agreeable ambience to the architecture. The well-grounded study accords well with the design. The project is at once spectacular, relevant and self-effacing. It proves that servant architecture can make a big difference, and as a result its designers have succeeded convincingly in realizing their ambition.

Honorable mentions
A home for the displaced, odesigned by: Anneloes de Koff, TU Delft (architecture)
This project takes an integrated approach, from user study to detailing and energy. The design presents a modular construction system used to house asylum seekers in the Van Gendt factory sheds in Amsterdam. The system makes a relevant contribution to resolving this pressing issue. The sheds are fitted out so as to encourage a varied, vibrant community for different groups of asylum seekers.

Hommage au Borinage, odesigned by: Giel Sengers, AvB Arnhem (architecture)
On a personal quest, the designer has developed a shelter for long-distance hikers in one of the 1100 terrils (mountains of mining spoil) along the 220-kilometre-long walking route through the Borinage region in Belgium. The atmosphere of the mine and the grim nature of the region have been made palpable in the shelter. The mystery of the landscape has been captured perfectly.

Ivalo River Sandbanks, odesigned by: Laura Langridge, TU Delft (architecture)
This graduation project presents a trio of buildings in the flood plains of the Ivalo River in the north of Finland. The design focuses primarily on constructing buildings in relation to nature where hikers can stay for short periods. The architectural brief is worked up wonderfully well with the appropriate use of sturdy materials.

Suspension of partnerships in Russia Solidarity with Ukraine
Archiprix is shocked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and empathizes with all those affected by it. We decided to suspend our partnerships in the Russian Federation and Belarus until further notice, in line with the urgent appeal of our government. We wish to express our solidarity with the people in Ukraine, and we embrace those in the academic communities in Russia who are speaking out against the invasion while courageously continuing to dedicate themselves to peace, dialogue and open cooperation. more
