Architecture, Sculpture, and the CityBefore sculpture stepped off of the pedestal, architecture was the sole creator of space. With the birth of the minimalist movement, sculpture entered the role as a space maker. Two types of spaces emerged: architectural space and sculptural space. Architectural space is produced in direct response to human scale and function. Sculptural space is created as a function of corporeality and temporality, that is, the viewer and movement of the viewer through the space. No longer are sculptural space and architectural space separate. Architecture must respond to this by allowing for these types of spaces to merge.
